Ticlopidine

Pronunciation: tye-KLOE-pi-deen
Generic Name: Ticlopidine
Brand Name: Ticlid

Ticlopidine can cause serious and sometimes life-threatening blood disorders. Symptoms may appear within the first few days of taking Ticlopidine. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop fever or chills, unexplained weakness or tiredness, weakness on one side of the body, sore throat, difficulty speaking, dark or bloody urine, pale skin or red spots under the skin, yellowing of the eyes or skin, easy bruising or bleeding, or mental or mood changes. Lab tests will be required to monitor treatment for the first 3 months and possibly longer. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments. Ticlopidine should be stopped if a serious blood disorder occurs.

Ticlopidine is used for:

Reducing the risk of stroke. It may also be used in combination with aspirin to prevent a blood clot from forming after a stent is placed in the coronary artery. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Ticlopidine is a platelet aggregation inhibitor. It works by thinning the blood, which helps reduce the risk of blood clots and stroke.

Do NOT use Ticlopidine if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Ticlopidine

  • you have an active bleeding disorder (eg, bleeding stomach ulcer, bleeding in the brain), a blood disease, blood clotting disorder, thrombocytopenic purpura, aplastic anemia, or severe liver problems

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Ticlopidine:

Some medical conditions may interact with Ticlopidine. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding

  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement

  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances

  • if you have an increased risk of bleeding due to trauma or surgery, a stomach ulcer, or liver or kidney problems

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Ticlopidine. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), aspirin, heparin, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (eg, ibuprofen) because the risk of bleeding may be increased

  • Antacids because the effectiveness of Ticlopidine may be decreased

  • Carbamazepine or theophylline because the actions and side effects may be decreased by Ticlopidine

  • Cyclosporine or phenytoin because the effectiveness may be decreased by Ticlopidine

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Ticlopidine may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Ticlopidine:

Use Ticlopidine as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Take Ticlopidine with food.

  • Ticlopidine comes with an additional patient leaflet. Read it carefully and reread it each time you get Ticlopidine refilled.

  • If you miss a dose of Ticlopidine, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Ticlopidine.

Important safety information:

  • Ticlopidine may reduce the number of clot-forming cells (platelets) in your blood. To prevent bleeding, avoid situations in which bruising or injury may occur. Report any unusual bleeding, bruising, blood in stools, or dark, tarry stools to your doctor.

  • Before you have any medical or dental treatments, emergency care, or surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using Ticlopidine.

  • LAB TESTS, including liver function and complete blood cell counts, may be performed to monitor your progress or to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.

  • Ticlopidine is not recommended for use in CHILDREN. Safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.

  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Ticlopidine during pregnancy. It is unknown if Ticlopidine is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Ticlopidine.
